Lesson 4 - Mixing your piece using Automation
Click on the button to the left and then click Login with Google.
Select your Google Account. When the screen loads select Studio from the top left |
1. FILE - OPEN - Select your file.
2. AUTOMATION is a process of telling the computer what you would like it to do. Think of this as programming certain commands for the computer to do while your piece is being played back. Click here for step by step directions.
3. Add VOLUME AUTOMATION to your piece. PANNING AUTOMATION will move sound from left to right depending on your choices. (This will only take place during stereo playback.) Since you will be presenting your project in the auditorium, please do not add this yet. The auditorium is wired for mono so the effect will not work properly.
4. You will click on the icon to the right of the Effects menu in the Audio Channel you wish to alter. Select Volume.
5. Once this is selected you can click on the line in the Channel to add points and can drag them up or down depending on what you would like to have happen with your volume. This will be demonstrated.
4. Once you have completed your project, save your File.
5. Find a peer to share your piece with and ask for comments.

Understanding the D.A.W. (Digital Audio Work Station)
Each audio channel is a separate track of streaming audio. In Soundation, the Audio Channels are grey and are used for the loops or sound clips from the Library. Each audio channel contains the following:
Effects - Allows the addition of an effect. By pressing the + sign it will generate a list of effects to choose from.
S - Solo - Only the channel selected with the S is played back. If multiple channels have the S pressed, they will be heard.
M - Mutes the channel for playback
Volume slider - Adjusts the volume for the track. This is a temporary fix to hear while creating. The Final mix will be more precise.
Pan knob - assigns the track to left, right or both speakers/headphones. Leave this in the center.
Automation Menu (icon to the right of the Effects drop down) - This menu will allow you to automate the volume or panning processes.

Understanding the Editing features - cutting, stretching and pitching.
Cursor tool - can alter the length by dragging the bottom left to make it shorter than what was provided or top right to make it longer than what was provided.
Cutting - The Scissor tool can cut an audio clip in the beginning middle or end. This can be done to eliminate parts of the clip. It is easiest to do if you zoom in on the file to better see the sound waves. There is a small slider on the bottom right below the library that can do this.
Stretching - Changes the Tempo and Length without changing Pitch.
Pitching - Changes Length, Pitch and Tempo
